In early 2012, Islamist armed groups swept in and occupied Northern Mali, demanding secession and the introduction of Sharia rule. In Gao, the historic capital of the North, young residents organized resistance groups to protect their families and liberate the city from the occupiers. Director Sanogo meets some of the leaders who took part in this heroic resistance, which is also celebrated by a griot’s retelling of the city’s long history of embracing diversity to maintain peace.
